Known as the “Olympics of violin making,” the Antonio Stradivari International Triennial Competition of Stringed Instruments”- in Italian Concorso Triennale Internazionale degli Strumenti ad Arco Antonio Stradivari - often referred to simply as the “Triennale” - is one of the premier international violin and bow making competitions in the world and takes place every three years in Cremona, Italy.
There have been 15 total Triennale competitions, although only 10 gold medals for viola have been awarded. There was no gold medal awarded for viola at the 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, or 15th Triennale competitions.
Of the 10 gold medals awarded for viola, viola makers from Italy and France lead the way, with 3 gold medals for each country. The remaining four gold medals belong to the US, UK, Russia, and Switzerland.
